We will obey. He will act.

It is often said that God will never give you more than you can handle. This is a reference to 1 Corinthians 10: 13:

No temptation has overtaken you except what is common to mankind. And God is faithful; he will not let you be tempted beyond what you can bear. But when you are tempted, he will also provide a way out so that you can endure it.

Paul is talking about temptation. He is encouraging us that no temptation has to master or rule over us, but that God is faithful to provide help to us so we can endure and escape the temptation.

What about the other attacks we face in life, such as trials and tribulations? Does God ever allow us to experience more than we can handle?

Jon Bloom has written a very helpful article on this subject. He relates the story found in Judges 7 of God’s call to Gideon to attack a Midianite army of 100,000 with a group of Israelites numbering 300. He writes, in the voice of Gideon:

In our people’s history, the mightiest have not been the strong warriors,” Gideon said. “The mightiest have been those who trusted in the Lᴏʀᴅ and obeyed him, no matter how impossible things appeared. He has promised us that Midian will be defeated. He has chosen only three hundred of us. We will obey, he will act. And when Midian falls it will be clear to everyone who felled him.

So yes, there are certainly times when God gives us more than we can handle. He does this because He doesn’t intend for us to handle it alone. He wants us to learn to trust Him more. We will obey, He will act.
